Dies and hands
for mass production
The "die" that is utilized for the production of automobile parts is a device that is employed for the purpose of mass production. However, the involvement of craftsmen is necessary for the creation of the die itself. In order to illustrate the distinction between the two distinct categories, namely, that of the inorganic and the organic, we have arranged them in the form of typological still-life photographs.

The term "mass production" evokes images of mechanical, inorganic, monotonous, and cold processes. This is indeed the case when one considers the products in isolation. Conversely, the rigorous and precise engineering work carried out by skilled humans also serves to reinforce the industry.
The automobile is emblematic of Japanese industry. The aforementioned dies are capable of supplying thousands of precise parts. Steel sheets are subjected to a continuous die press process, whereby they are transformed into identical automotive components. In the die-maker factory, the engineers appear to interact with the materials in a manner that suggests a deep level of familiarity and respect. Similarly, the terms "warm," "vivid," "organic," and "humane" can be applied to mass production.
